Newfoundland Hunting Outfitters
Sou'wester Outfitting along with Caribou Valley Outfitters are owned and operated by Dean and Bonnie Wheeler. With 20 years of outfitting experience they offer single or combo hunts for Woodland Caribou, Moose and Black Bear. All hunts are a week in duration, fly-in, one-on-one guided and spot and stalk in nature. The spot and stalk method of hunting requires the hunter to hike the countryside while keeping a lookout for the quarry of one's choice. Hunts are offered from five fully serviced hunting lodges within the Newfoundland interior.

Moose Hunts
Sou'wester Outfitting/Caribou Valley Outfitters offer week long Newfoundland Moose Hunts from full service lodges situated on Loon Lake, Decker’s Pond, Indian Lake, Caribou Lake and Little Lake. Hunts are conducted using the spot and stalk method and experienced guides can call moose within range. Small boats are utilized to cross the larger bodies of water and allow hunters to cover the area in close proximity to the main lodges.
Moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family. They were introduced to the province of Newfoundland at the turn of the last century and because of the excellent forage they have increased their numbers to between 120,000 and 150,000 animals. A large bull moose, standing higher than a large saddle horse and sporting a massive antler display, can be an imposing and challenging quarry. A mature male sometimes weighs up to 1,500 lbs. The mating period for moose usually runs from late September to early November. Newfoundland moose are classified as "Eastern Canadian" by "Boone and Crockett", "Pope and Young", and "Safari Club International". Bow, muzzleloader and rifle hunting are welcome, with Sou'wester Outfitting's success rate for non-resident rifle hunters running over 90%.

Woodland Caribou Hunting:
The Caribou Valley camps are situated within designated Wilderness and Ecological Reserves which just happens to be the Spring calving ground and the Fall breeding ground for Woodland Caribou. This, combined with the restriction of local hunters and other outfitters, results in a near 100% success rate each year and the quality of the game is second to none.
The caribou (Rangifer tarandus) is the most widely distributed big game animal in Canada and Newfoundland's Woodland variety is the world’s most southerly herd. Although there are small numbers of Woodland Caribou in other locations in Canada, Newfoundland offers the only opportunity for a non-resident to take this trophy. The Woodland Caribou share the same habitat as moose thus giving the combination moose/caribou hunt its popularity. Many record book animals have been taken as the Boone and Crocket records attest.
Large males, weighing upwards of 500 lbs and sporting an impressive, mahogany coloured, antlered crown is beautiful to see and a challenge to hunt. The mating period for caribou usually occurs during the period of early October to mid November. As with moose hunting, hunters may use bow, muzzleloader or rifle. Our Woodland Caribou hunts are truly world class and are second to none in quality.
This unique trophy animal can only be hunted and harvested in Newfoundland, Canada so if a trophy Woodland caribou is on your to do list, we have the hunt for you!

Newfoundland Black Bear Hunting:
Sou’wester Outfitting/Caribou Valley black bear hunts are offered in combination with moose or caribou. Although we do bait the majority of the bear hunts are conducted using the spot and stalk method. Black Bear are found at all five lodges and the opportunity does exist to spot one while hunting moose or caribou.
The North American black bear is the best known and most widespread of the North American bears. Adult black bears, standing over three feet at the shoulders, have a predominantly black coat that is smooth and short haired. A combination of genetics and very low hunting pressure make the Newfoundland Black Bear bigger than any of its North American cousins. Frequently weighing over 500 lbs, their numbers are estimated at over 10,000 animals. It is only a matter of time before a Newfoundland Black Bear shatters the current North American records. These magnificent predators make for an interesting hunt for the knowledgeable and experienced hunter.
Hunters of Sou’wester Outfitting/Caribou Valley Outfitters have the option of having their Black Bear trophies, as well as moose and caribou, prepared by a local taxidermist.
