Big Game Hunting with Pine Ridge Lodge

Visit our site for more information: www.pineridge.nf.ca

Hello, and welcome to the web site of Pine Ridge Lodge and Wilderness Tours Limited, your window into Big Game Hunting Adventures in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. We truly appreciate not only your interest in hunting, but also your interest in hunting with us at our various hunting locations. We operate four fixed hunting camps, and a number of spike-camps most of which are accessible only by float-plane or helicopter, while only two are accessible by an ATV road.

We hunt with and guide hunters from around the world who are in search of big game hunting adventures in an unspoiled land where “Fair Chase” hunting is both a core value and a responsibility. We have grown up as members of hunting families and we are hunters. We believe there is no other outdoor pursuit that offers the range of rewards available from hunting, and few other pursuits that generates the life long friendships and camaraderie as does hunting. Our passion is hunting, and we invite you to come with us.

Big game hunting opportunities at our various hunting locations are provided through facilities strategically located amidst confirmed healthy game populations. Our hunting lodges are located on large water systems and are equipped with safe boats to ensure access to the largest possible hunting areas. In addition, when your trophy animal has been harvested, it will be removed from the kill site using 8 wheeled ATV’s to ensure prime quality table fare and trophy, and to minimize the physical exertion required.

Moose hunting, caribou hunting, and black bear hunting can be done as a single species hunt, or as a combination of any two or all three species. Rifle hunting, bow hunting, or muzzle-loader hunting is possible. Hunting packages of both 6 days and 12 days are available. As well, coyote hunting is complementary to all big game hunts offered at all our hunting locations.

Please note that we can arrange on your behalf an assortment of hunting support services including taxidermy, game butchering, cold storage, packaging, and shipping.

Moose Hunting In Newfoundland, Canada

Moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family. Mature males sometimes weigh up to 1500 lbs. Moose were introduced to the province of Newfoundland in 1906, and because of the excellent forage have increased their numbers to 120,000.

Many areas of the province boast the highest moose densities in the world. A large bull moose, standing higher than a large saddle horse and sporting a massive antler display can be an imposing and challenging quarry.

The mating period for moose, considered by many hunters the most successful time for hunting, runs from late September to early November. Notwithstanding the rut period, some of the very best times for hunting moose is after the rut, during the latter part of November.

Newfoundland moose are classified as “Eastern Canadian” by “Boone and Crockett”, “Pope and Young”, and “Safari Club International”. Though generally smaller in body and antler size than their Alaskan cousins, Newfoundland moose are no less challenging to hunt.

Hunting season begins in early September with a two week “archery only” component, followed by a general season with archery, rifle and muzzleloader until the end of November.

MOOSE HUNTING SUCCESS RATES IS 90% average over (21 years).

Woodland Caribou Hunting In Newfoundland, Canada

Big game hunting for Woodland Caribou is allowable only in Newfoundland.

At Pine Ridge Lodge, we hunt the Middle Ridge herd - the largest woodland caribou herd and the one with the highest proportion of trophy class animals. Large males, weighing upwards of 500 lbs. and sporting an impressive mahogany colored antlered crown is beautiful to see and a challenge to hunt. The mating period for caribou usually occurs during the period early October to mid November.

Big Game Hunters at Pine Ridge Lodge’s various locations enjoy the benefits of being able to hunt from lodges and/or outpost camps throughout the whole home range of the Middle Ridge herd, and, can be relocated anywhere within this home range if needed to ensure a successful hunt. This, as well as being able to hunt with guides who are experienced and knowledgeable about caribou movements, gathering areas and habitat are features that combine to place Pine Ridge Lodge hunters in areas with the highest concentration of Trophy Class Woodland Caribou.

During the past four years, Pine Ridge Lodge hunters have recorded the # 2 Pope and Young; the # 5 and #11 Boone and Crockett, and the # 4 and 5 SCI woodland caribou. The # 5 Boone and Crockett was the largest woodland caribou recorded within the past 30 years. 25% of the woodland caribou taken at Pine Ridge Lodge are record book specimens.

Black Bear Hunting In Newfoundland, Canada

ASK ABOUT OUR SPECIAL “SPOT-AND-STALK” SPRING BLACK BEAR HUNT- ONLY AVAILABLE AT PINE RIDGE LODGE.

The Black Bear (Ursus Americanus Hamilton) in Newfoundland, is the most voracious of our predators. Wildlife Biologists estimate that 35 to 40 per cent of moose and caribou calves are killed annually by Black Bears, and, they also kill adult animals of both species.

Newfoundland Black Bears are amongst the largest on the planet.

The reasons for the large body size are not known. However, there is likely a link between this unusually large body size and the high protein intake from predation on moose and caribou.

A study conducted by the Newfoundland Wildlife Division revealed the male black bear in our area is 37% larger, and female black bear is 55% larger, on average, then their cousins in New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, Maine, and Alaska.

At the various Pine Ridge Lodge locations within the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve, we are amidst the very best Black Bear habitat, and the large bears taken here is the undisputed evidence of this fact.

You will not be hunting with a busload of bear hunters. You won’t hear the factory whistle, nor will your hunt be disturbed by passing ATV’s or pick-up trucks.

You will be in remote wilderness, where we manage the hunting to ensure that hunters consistently have opportunities to take bear in the 300 to 700 pound class. So, bring your heavyweight bows and rifles.

This is Black Bear Hunting at its best. The province of Newfoundland offers two black bear hunting seasons - Spring, and Fall. Hunting is permitted with baited stands in both seasons.

We also offer a “spot-and-stalk” hunt in both seasons. Spring hunting season runs from late May to early July, with archery, rifle or muzzle-loader. Fall hunting opens in early September and continues until early November.
